Victoria proposes 30km/h speed limits near schools to boost safety, backed by public support.
A new 30-year infrastructure strategy released by Infrastructure Victoria in November 2025 recommends lowering speed limits to 30km/h on local streets near schools, playgrounds, and childcare centers to improve safety after several high-profile pedestrian and cyclist deaths.
The proposal, supported by nearly 80% of public submissions, builds on trials in Melbourne’s City of Yarra since 2018 and aims to reduce risks without significantly affecting travel times.
It also calls for expanded protected bike lanes in major regional cities, off-peak commuter fare reductions, a 15-year plan to build 60,000 social homes, and a five-year waste levy pricing framework.
The Victorian government has 12 months to respond.
