U.S. tariff hikes on Cambodia could harm its economy, raising unemployment and poverty, the ADB warns.
The Asian Development Bank warns that increasing the U.S. tariff on Cambodian goods beyond the current 19 percent, imposed in August 2025, could severely harm Cambodia’s economy, slowing growth by nearly 1 percentage point, pushing over 100,000 people into unemployment, and raising poverty by more than 1 percentage point.
Workers in garment and electronics sectors would be hardest hit, potentially forced into lower-paying jobs.
The ADB recommends temporary relief like social transfers and job training, and stresses long-term investments in infrastructure, education, and business reforms to build economic resilience.
