A University of Sydney report reveals inefficiency and poor student support despite financial surplus and enrollment growth, sparking staff fears of layoffs.
An internal University of Sydney report has revealed widespread bureaucratic inefficiencies, excessive middle management, and poor student support despite a $545 million surplus and a 10,000-student rise in international enrolments since 2019.
Professional staff grew 30% to 5,961 between 2019 and 2024, outpacing student and academic growth, yet satisfaction with services has not improved.
The report cited complex processes—up to 70 steps and 17 systems to update a course—and widespread frustration over slow decisions and unclear accountability.
While leadership says the review aims to improve services, not cut jobs, staff fear layoffs, especially after other NSW universities reduced positions.
Academic and teaching staff are excluded from the consultation.
