75 UK MPs demand relocating 15 penguins from London aquarium over welfare concerns.
Seventy-five UK MPs and animal welfare advocates are demanding the relocation of 15 gentoo penguins at the Sea Life London Aquarium, citing poor conditions in a basement-like enclosure without natural light or fresh air.
The penguins, held since 2011, are at the center of a campaign calling for improved welfare standards and a review by the government.
A petition has drawn over 37,000 signatures.
Merlin Entertainments, the aquarium’s owner, denies the basement claim, stating the exhibit is on the ground floor, designed to mimic natural habitats with climate control and expert care, and that releasing the birds into the wild is unsafe due to their lifelong dependence on human support.
The company says it follows international animal welfare guidelines and collaborates with independent experts.
