46 trees were illegally cut in Victoria Park during a redevelopment, sparking council investigation and public concern.
The Town of Victoria Park is under scrutiny after 46 trees were cut down without approval during a parkland upgrade near the Elizabeth Baillie House redevelopment, a project led by Blackoak Capital and funded in part by a $4 million federal grant.
Mayor Karen Vernon called the incident “deeply disappointing and very embarrassing,” acknowledging the council’s responsibility despite Blackoak’s claim of no involvement.
The trees, removed on council-managed land, were not part of the approved plan, which allowed only 11 trees for removal due to health or safety issues.
The council is investigating how the unauthorized removals occurred, citing possible failures in tree protection zones and declining tree health.
Plans include planting 43 new trees between May and August, with additional plantings under consideration.
Residents expressed concern over the loss of mature trees and habitat for native wildlife, including red-tailed black cockatoos.
The heritage-listed Elizabeth Baillie House, formerly Edward Millen House, is being transformed into a community hub with a café, museum, bar, and microbrewery.
