flag Students' designs for Picton’s square blend Māori culture and nature, open for public feedback until Nov. 19.

Second-year landscape architecture students from Victoria University of Wellington have presented 10 concept designs for reimagining Picton’s Nelson Square, drawing on Mātauranga Māori, local history, and environmental storytelling. The exhibition, open until November 19 at Picton Library, features elements like a whale sculpture symbolizing the Tohorā journey, a path inspired by the taniwha Tui Ngarara, and a Matariki-themed amphitheatre. Other proposals include an octopus playground, fragrance garden, Rongoā tea house, and seating from recycled railway sleepers. Developed with community and mana whenua input, the designs aim to honor Waitohi’s cultural and natural heritage. Public feedback via QR codes will inform the Marlborough District Council’s future planning. The project, backed by Better Off Funding, is a collaboration between the council, Victoria University, Te Ātiawa, and Kūmānu.
