Melissa O’Meara, principal of Bega Valley Public School, shared a personal story about her grandfather, WWII veteran Patrick Smith, who served in Africa and Papua New Guinea and survived a dangerous leap into an enemy bunker in Egypt, narrowly avoiding pin bombs. Student captains laid wreaths on behalf of local groups, and emcee John Watkin stressed the importance of remembering sacrifices made to secure peace, emphasizing that the legacy of service remains vital. The nation observed a moment of silence at 11am.
