Quebec man sentenced to life in prison for 1994 murder of 10-year-old Marie-Chantale Desjardins, solved by DNA evidence.
A Quebec judge has sentenced Réal Courtemanche, 60, to life in prison with no parole for 25 years for the 1994 second-degree murder of 10-year-old Marie-Chantale Desjardins in Sainte-Thérèse.
The victim vanished on July 16, 1994, and was found four days later in a wooded area with signs of a violent attack.
Advances in DNA technology linked Courtemanche to the crime, and he admitted guilt last month.
Judge Hélène Di Salvo ruled there is "no hope for rehabilitation," citing his lengthy criminal history, lack of remorse, and status as a declared dangerous offender since 2015.
The maximum sentence was recommended by both prosecution and defense.
The victim’s mother, Sylvie Desjardins, spoke during the hearing, which the judge praised as a testament to strength.
The case, unsolved for nearly 30 years, brings closure after 31 years.
