A Polish pilot, Michal Luczak, 44, has been convicted on all charges in a 2022 cocaine smuggling case involving 120 kilograms of drugs worth €8.4 million, with sentencing delayed until December 8, 2025.
Found guilty after a three-week trial at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court, Luczak claimed he was unaware of the drugs and using flights for pilot training.
His co-defendant, Timothy Gilchrist, 57, previously jailed for 11 years, testified he alone handled the drugs and was threatened.
Despite Luczak’s defense, a jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts after three hours and 16 minutes of deliberation.
The operation involved a Cessna 182 aircraft flying from Abbeyshrule Aerodrome in County Longford to France.
The case, investigated by the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, involved over 50 witnesses and highlighted cross-border trafficking using small aircraft.
