Ofwat proposes £11M penalty against Wessex Water for sewage spills, demanding system upgrades and monitoring.
Ofwat has proposed an £11 million enforcement action against Wessex Water for failures in managing its wastewater system, leading to sewage spills from storm overflows.
The penalty, funded by the company and its Malaysian parent YTL without passing costs to customers, requires upgrades to reduce spills, install monitoring systems, and help landowners seal sewer pipes.
This marks the sixth such action this year, bringing total penalties in the sector to over £240 million.
While Ofwat acknowledged Wessex Water’s proactive efforts, it stressed remaining breaches must be corrected.
The move follows a 20% water bill increase, raising concerns over financial practices.
