A New Zealand man was jailed for fatally shooting his friend during an illegal, cannabis-impaired hunt, after falsely claiming self-defense.
Mark Jefferson, 47, was sentenced to three years in prison for accidentally killing his friend Stuart Stobie during a nighttime hunting trip in New Zealand on March 21, 2025.
Jefferson, who had used cannabis and lacked a firearm licence, was hunting illegally outside the season and was carrying Stobie’s rifle with a thermal scope.
After missing two shots at a deer, he fatally struck Stobie with a third shot, initially claiming Stobie had shot himself.
Jefferson confessed three days later, admitting to lying and failing to identify his target.
The court cited multiple aggravating factors, including illegal hunting, substance use, and deception, calling the incident more than a tragic accident.
Justice Andrew Becroft emphasized the need for stricter firearm safety, and the sentence was reduced for remorse and cooperation.
