The Netherlands will extend temporary border controls until June 8, 2026, to combat irregular migration and cross-border crime, according to Minister David van Weel.
Measures, active since December 2024, involve the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee at borders with Belgium and Germany, and on high-risk international trains and flights.
Since implementation, 470 people have been denied entry at land borders, and 230 arrested for offenses including document fraud and human smuggling.
Airport checks, expanded in late July, resulted in 20 return orders after 500 flights were screened.
The government says the steps are vital for public order and system integrity while minimizing disruptions to trade and travel.
