Nebraska appoints Derek Vaughn, its first Black Supreme Court justice, effective Nov. 10, 2025.
Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen appointed Douglas County District Judge Derek R. Vaughn as the state’s first Black justice on the Nebraska Supreme Court on November 10, 2025, succeeding retiring Justice Lindsey Miller-Lerman, the first woman on the court.
Vaughn, who has served as a district judge since 2023 and previously worked in county court and the Douglas County Attorney’s Office, will face voter approval in 2028.
His appointment marks a historic milestone in the state’s judiciary and reflects ongoing efforts to diversify the bench.
