Lagos seeks Supreme Court action over federal gaming bill, calling it unconstitutional.
Lagos State has asked Nigeria’s Supreme Court to allow contempt proceedings against the National Assembly over the Central Gaming Bill, arguing it violates a November 2024 ruling that declared federal lottery and gaming laws unconstitutional.
Lagos contends the bill’s provisions mirror the invalidated National Lottery Act and improperly extend federal authority over matters reserved to states under the 1999 Constitution.
The state, which initiated legal action in 2008, seeks a Form 48 notice to enforce the court’s decision, warning of potential imprisonment if ignored.
The bill remains under consideration in both houses of the National Assembly.
