IIT Guwahati researchers created a gel that detects and removes kerosene from petrol and oil spills, preventing explosions and environmental harm.
Researchers at IIT Guwahati have developed a Phase-Selective Organogelator (PSOG) that detects kerosene in petrol and selectively gels oils like diesel and kerosene from water, enabling easy removal without harming aquatic environments.
The material self-assembles to trap target oils, forming solid gels that can be lifted, offering a safer alternative to polluting cleanup methods.
The innovation aims to combat fuel adulteration, which poses explosion risks, especially in low-income households, and addresses the growing threat of oil spills, with 10,000 tons spilled globally in 2024.
Led by Professor Gopal Das and team, the research was published in Chemical Engineering, with future work focused on improving detection accuracy and expanding applications.
