Five former Irish police officers stand trial for allegedly blocking traffic fines, mainly for athletes, between 2016 and 2019.
A jury has been sworn in at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court for the trial of five former Irish police officers—four serving and one retired—accused of attempting to pervert justice by interfering with traffic penalty notices between October 2016 and September 2019.
The defendants, including retired Superintendent Eamon O'Neill, face 42 counts related to allegedly terminating fixed charge notices for offenses like speeding and using mobile phones while driving, particularly involving individuals linked to the sporting community in County Limerick.
The case stems from a probe by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and the trial, expected to last up to six weeks, may involve around 100 witnesses, including senior officers, IT experts, and officials from An Post and the Department of Transport.
All five defendants have remained on bail since their arrest in April 2021 and pleaded not guilty.
