BOC pays $740K to settle 2023 Cringila plant oil spill, funding creek and wetland restoration.
BOC Limited has agreed to pay $740,000 in an enforceable undertaking to resolve a 2023 oil spill at its Cringila plant, where over 2,000 liters of turbine oil leaked into nearby creeks during maintenance.
The settlement includes $300,000 for water quality improvements at Coomaditchie Lagoon, a nationally recognized wetland under a WaterNSW red alert due to toxic algal blooms.
Funds will support solar-powered aerators, water monitoring, and vegetation management to protect the endangered Green and Golden Bell Frog.
BOC will also spend $168,000 on site upgrades, $273,000 on cleanup and enforcement costs, and $75,000 to BlueScope Steel for its response.
The project, led by Wollongong City Council with input from Aboriginal groups, emphasizes ecological restoration and cultural preservation.
