A bipartisan Senate deal ends the longest U.S. government shutdown, reopening agencies and restoring benefits.
A bipartisan Senate deal to end the longest U.S. government shutdown in history has passed a key procedural vote, advancing legislation that would reopen federal agencies through January 30, 2026, restore SNAP benefits, and provide backpay to furloughed workers.
The bill includes full-year funding for military construction, agriculture, and veterans’ affairs through September 2026, and reimburses states for continuing SNAP and WIC programs during the shutdown.
However, it does not extend Affordable Care Act health care subsidies, a major Democratic concern, which will be addressed in a separate vote next month.
The measure now moves to the House, where lawmakers are expected to return for a vote, with President Trump welcoming the progress.
