Belleville is removing its speed cameras Friday due to new provincial laws calling them a “cash grab,” despite safety benefits.
Belleville will deactivate its municipal speed cameras at midnight Friday, following new provincial legislation under Premier Doug Ford’s government, which labeled the devices a “cash grab.” Despite city officials’ concerns over safety, the cameras had reportedly improved driver behavior, with a 2024 study showing 73% of drivers slowed near them.
Violations recorded before removal will still be processed.
The province plans to replace cameras with roundabouts, speed bumps, and signage, claiming these alternatives are “100 per cent effective.” Belleville will continue traffic-calming efforts.
