Two foreigners arrested in Cape Town for allegedly possessing R3M abalone face court after a major wildlife bust.
Two foreign nationals, a Chinese and a Malawian citizen, are set to appear in South Africa’s Athlone Magistrates’ Court after being arrested in Cape Town for allegedly possessing abalone worth over R3 million.
The arrest followed an intelligence-led operation by the South African Police Service and the Endangered Species K9 Unit, which uncovered a drying facility with 6,400 abalone units, valued at approximately R3.52 million.
The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment praised the operation as a key step in combating illegal wildlife trade and protecting marine resources.
The seizure supports South Africa’s commitments under the Cape Town Declaration and the uplisting of dried abalone under Appendix II of CITES to strengthen global trade controls.
The government reiterated its dedication to sustainable fisheries and preserving ocean ecosystems.
