Supreme Court to hear contempt case over Telangana Speaker’s delay in acting on 10 MLAs' disqualification.
The Supreme Court will hear on November 17 a petition seeking contempt action against the Telangana Assembly Speaker for failing to act on disqualification pleas of 10 BRS MLAs who defected to the Congress, despite a July 31 directive to decide within three months.
Petitioners allege the delay, possibly aimed at avoiding scrutiny before Chief Justice B R Gavai’s retirement, undermines democratic principles and the court’s authority.
The court has affirmed that the Speaker, while adjudicating under the Tenth Schedule, is not immune from judicial review and must act promptly.
No proceedings have been initiated since the order, leaving the MLAs in office without resolution.
