A miner is trapped 3/4 mile underground in a West Virginia coal mine after a flood caused by a collapsed old wall.
A coal miner is trapped deep inside the Rolling Thunder mine in Nicholas County, West Virginia, after a sudden flood Saturday about three-quarters of a mile into the underground operation near Drennen, roughly 50 miles east of Charleston.
Officials believe the flooding resulted from a compromised old mine wall, prompting a multi-agency rescue effort involving water pumping and an underwater drone.
All other miners were accounted for.
The mine, operated by Tennessee-based Alpha Metallurgical Resources Inc., is one of 11 underground mines the company runs in West Virginia.
A February report noted the area had been extensively explored with no major hydrologic concerns identified despite the coal seam’s proximity to Twenty Mile Creek.
The situation remains active, with rescue operations ongoing.
