Lake Macquarie City Council has introduced a two-year 100% fee discount for developers building affordable housing in infill areas, saving about $6,000 per two-bedroom apartment and $5,000 per secondary dwelling, as part of a strategy to increase housing supply.
The policy, unanimously approved by councillors, is expected to cost the council $790,000 annually and follows recommendations from the April Housing Forum.
It does not apply to greenfield developments.
A separate, unchanged 2008 flooding and sea level rise policy was advanced, drawing criticism for being outdated despite projections that over 12,000 properties could be at risk.
Some councillors warned of long-term financial and environmental risks, calling for a comprehensive review.
