India plans SEZ reforms to boost manufacturing and exports by integrating zones with domestic markets.
India is considering reforms to integrate its special economic zones (SEZs) more closely with the domestic market, aiming to boost manufacturing, exports, and investment.
Proposed changes include simplifying customs duties for goods moving from SEZs to India’s domestic market, allowing payments in Indian rupees for local services, and letting domestic firms send goods to SEZs for outsourcing.
These adjustments, which may require amending the 2006 SEZ Act, seek to transform SEZs from export-only zones into integrated development hubs.
SEZs currently account for about 20% of India’s goods exports, with FY25 exports reaching ₹14.57 lakh crore.
Officials and industry leaders stress the need for faster action, digital clearances, and reduced transaction costs to enhance competitiveness in sectors like semiconductors and green energy.
