Former NZ MP Roger McClay, 80, dies after cancer battle; served 1984–1996, advocated for youth and children’s rights.
Roger Neville McClay, a former New Zealand National Party MP and minister who served from 1984 to 1996, has died at age 80 after a five-year cancer battle.
He represented Taupō and Waikaremoana, holding roles including Minister of Youth Affairs and Commissioner for Children, and was honored with a Queen’s Service Order in 2005.
A former teacher and principal, he was known for his advocacy for youth and children’s rights.
His son, current Trade Minister Todd McClay, announced his passing on November 7, 2025, at home surrounded by family.
A public commemoration is set for November 13 in Taupō.
