A 24-year-old man in Brisbane was acquitted of murder and manslaughter after a 2021 road-rage incident that killed 25-year-old Troy Edward Vandenberg.
The confrontation began at traffic lights, where Vandenberg, wearing only underwear, attacked the defendant’s car, retrieved a hammer, and attempted to throw it at the vehicle as it approached.
The accused, Umar Hussein Alkhalifa Al Enizi, claimed he swerved in instinctive self-defense after being repeatedly confronted and followed.
Dashcam footage and witness testimony supported both sides’ accounts.
After a four-day trial, a jury found him not guilty, with Vandenberg’s family visibly distressed and Al Enizi emotional but silent afterward.
