Barco Brasil, a Brazilian Class40 "sharps" team, has taken the lead in its category after completing the second leg of the Globe40 race from Cape Verde to Réunion Island in 36 days, 14 hours, and 47 minutes.
Despite facing prolonged calms near South Africa, the team of neurosurgeon José Guilherme Caldas and sailor Luiz Bolina closed a 4-day deficit to finish 827 miles behind the leader by October 30.
The "sharps" class, consisting of older boats, maintains its own ranking and adds diversity to the race.
Next "sharps" to arrive include Wilson Around the World, Free Dom, Jangada Racing, and Whiskey Jack.
Meanwhile, the "scows" class remains tightly contested, with the top three boats separated by just 0.3 miles as the finish nears.
