The U.S. has disbanded its federal cultural property investigations program, reassigning agents from Homeland Security’s Cultural Property, Art and Antiquities unit to immigration enforcement under the Trump administration.
The program, established in 2017, had repatriated over 20,000 artifacts to more than 40 countries and investigated looted relics, including Thai artifacts in the Denver Art Museum linked to a 1960s theft.
Since early 2025, agents have been redirected to tasks like transporting detainees, despite the low resource demands of cultural heritage cases.
Former investigators say the shift undermines global efforts to protect cultural heritage, and the Department of Homeland Security has not responded to requests for comment.
