UPS and FedEx grounded 50+ MD-11 planes after a Nov. 6 crash in Louisville killed 14, with NTSB investigating.
UPS and FedEx have grounded their combined fleet of over 50 MD-11 cargo planes following a deadly crash at UPS’s Louisville hub on November 6, 2025, that killed 14 people.
The MD-11, built in 1991, caught fire on takeoff, lost an engine, and crashed into a warehouse district after a cockpit alarm sounded about 37 seconds after thrust was requested.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating, with no cause yet determined, though the alarm likely signaled an engine fire.
Both carriers cited manufacturer recommendations in the grounding, though Boeing, which acquired McDonnell Douglas in 1997, did not explain its guidance.
The aircraft had undergone over a month of maintenance in San Antonio prior to the crash.
UPS resumed limited operations at its Louisville hub shortly after.
