A UK sculpture honors WWII civilian workers, inspired by the artist’s grandfather who supplied the Royal Navy.
A 12-foot steel sculpture titled "Fighting From Home" was unveiled on Remembrance Sunday in Cradley Heath, UK, honoring the estimated five million workers in reserved occupations during World War II.
Created by sculptor Luke Perry, the artwork features an Admiralty Class anchor and is inspired by Perry’s grandfather, chainmaker Eric Attwood, who supplied the Royal Navy.
Located in the former St Luke’s churchyard, the monument was funded in part by the Arts Council and Sandwell Council, with materials and labor donated by Perry’s family’s business.
Over 200 people attended the ceremony, including relatives of local workers.
Perry said the statue preserves the legacy of civilians whose vital labor sustained the war effort and daily life, ensuring their often-overlooked contributions are remembered.
