A Tauranga man was sentenced to 9.5 months home detention for historical sexual abuse of two siblings in the 1970s and 80s.
A Tauranga man, Noel Raymond Candy, 65, was sentenced to nine-and-a-half months of home detention for historical sexual offences against two siblings in the late 1970s or early 1980s, when he was 18.
The abuse occurred during a family stay, with Candy found guilty of indecency with a girl under 12 and indecent assault on a boy, including forcing one child to perform a sexual act.
Both victims, who only learned they were both abused decades later, described lasting emotional trauma, including shame, anxiety, and relationship difficulties.
They reported the crimes after realizing they were not alone, rejected restorative justice due to Candy’s lack of remorse, and declined a $2,500 compensation offer.
Judge Melinda Mason noted challenges in sentencing due to legal and societal changes over time.
