Survivors in Auckland marked one year since New Zealand’s apology for abuse in care systems with a national remembrance event.
On November 12, 2025, survivors of abuse in New Zealand’s state and faith-based care systems gathered in Auckland for a National Day of Remembrance, marking one year since the government’s formal apology following a major Royal Commission.
The event, organized by Citizens Commission on Human Rights (NZ) and Te Ata Mental Health Support Services, included a moment of silence, a Remembrance Wall honoring deceased survivors, and new exhibits on historical psychiatric abuses like electroshock therapy and experimental treatments.
The inaugural Anne Helm Memorial Award was presented to recognize advocacy efforts.
Organizers emphasized the day as a call for public awareness, solidarity, and justice.
Los sobrevivientes en Auckland conmemoraron un año desde que Nueva Zelanda pidió disculpas por el abuso en los sistemas de atención con un evento de conmemoración nacional.
