President Mahama vowed to protect journalists, investigate election violence suspects, and restore Ghana’s press freedom.
President John Dramani Mahama pledged at the 29th Ghana Journalists Association Media Awards on November 8, 2025, that no journalist will be forced into exile under his administration, vowing to protect media freedom and end intimidation.
He announced investigations into election-related violence against journalists have identified 21 suspects, with four arrested and released on bail, five remanded, and warrants issued for the rest.
Mahama directed the Chief of Staff to cover medical expenses for journalists injured in attacks by illegal miners and called for a permanent dialogue platform between security agencies and the media.
He expressed concern over Ghana’s declining press freedom ranking and committed to restoring the country’s former status as a regional leader in media independence.
The event, held at Manhyia Palace under the patronage of the Asantehene, also highlighted the media’s role in combating galamsey and promoting national development.
