A Paris court will decide Monday whether former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, serving a 20-day prison term for alleged Libyan campaign funding, can be released pending appeal.
A Paris court is set to rule on Monday on whether former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, 70, will be released from prison after just 20 days of serving a five-year sentence for criminal conspiracy related to alleged Libyan campaign funding in 2007.
Sarkozy, the first modern French president to serve time in prison, denies the charges, calling the case a political vendetta linked to his role in the 2011 NATO intervention that led to Muammar Gaddafi’s downfall.
While the court found evidence of secret meetings with Gaddafi’s brother-in-law, Abdullah al-Senoussi, it did not establish that the funds were used in his campaign.
His legal team is seeking early release under French law, which presumes release pending appeal unless the defendant poses a flight risk or threat.
A final ruling on a separate 2012 campaign financing case is expected on November 26, and Sarkozy faces new allegations of witness tampering.
If approved, he could be released within hours, pending judicial supervision.
