A Paris court decides whether to release former French President Nicolas Sarkozy after 20 days of a five-year sentence for conspiracy linked to 2007 campaign funding.
A Paris court is set to decide on Monday whether to release former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, 70, from prison after just 20 days of serving a five-year sentence for criminal conspiracy related to secret meetings with Libya’s former intelligence chief over campaign funding in 2007.
Sarkozy, the first modern French president to serve time in prison, denies wrongdoing, claiming the case is politically motivated and that no direct evidence links Libyan funds to his campaign.
The court will assess whether he can be conditionally released under judicial supervision, pending appeal.
He faces additional legal challenges, including a Nov. 26 ruling on a separate 2012 campaign financing conviction and new charges over alleged witness tampering.
