Over 1.6 million children in Pakistan’s Sindh province work, with 800,000 in hazardous jobs, despite government claims of progress.
A 2025 survey in Pakistan’s Sindh province found over 1.6 million children aged 5 to 17 are engaged in child labour, accounting for 10.3% of the child population, with about 800,000 in hazardous work.
The study, conducted by the Sindh Labour Department with UNICEF and the Bureau of Statistics, revealed only 40.6% of working children attend school, compared to 70.5% of non-working peers.
High rates were seen in Qambar Shahdadkot and Tharparkar, while Karachi had the lowest at 2.38%.
The government cites near 50% decline since 1996 and ongoing efforts including law reforms, raids, awareness campaigns, and a new task force.
Advocates stress that poverty, large families, and limited education access continue to drive the issue, calling for broader economic and social reforms.
