On November 9, 2025, during Uttarakhand’s statehood silver jubilee, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the state government signed a Memorandum of Understanding to transfer control of Naini Saini Airport in Pithoragarh to AAI.
The 70-acre airport, currently serving up to 40 passengers at peak times and handling two Code-2B aircraft, will undergo upgrades to improve safety, operations, and regional air connectivity in the Himalayan Kumaon region.
The move aims to boost tourism, trade, healthcare, education, and disaster response, while creating local jobs and supporting economic development.
