A 4-km stretch of Depot Creek is being restored to protect trout and invertebrates, with work in summer 2025 focusing on erosion control and habitat improvement.
The Depot Creek Restoration Project, ongoing since 2017, is stabilizing a 4-kilometer stretch of the creek to protect coldwater habitats for speckled trout and invertebrates damaged by historic flooding, including Hurricane Hazel in 1956.
In summer 2025, work focused on installing low log walls and brush piles to reduce erosion, narrow channels, deepen flows, and create silt-free gravel and cobble pools.
Downed trees were removed to improve water movement and manage shading.
Funding came from the federal Environmental Damages Fund, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters ($2,063 in 2025, $2,250 in 2024), and the Greater Nipissing Stewardship Council ($2,450), with volunteers contributing roughly 350 hours.
