John Bell, 44, accused of sexually assaulting an eight-year-old boy at a Loch Ness campsite in July, died in his cell at HMP Inverness on November 8 while awaiting trial.
The alleged attack occurred in the early hours of July 31 inside the boy’s tent; the child’s father reported seeing Bell fleeing the scene.
Bell was charged in September, appeared in court, and was remanded without entering a plea.
Police Scotland and the Procurator Fiscal have been notified, and a Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held.
The Scottish Prison Service called the death a tragedy.
