Hawaii’s Big Island now has new air medical evac services after a $15.5M community effort, cutting response times and improving emergency care access.
The Life Flight Network has launched medical evacuation services on Hawaii’s Big Island with a helicopter in Kona and a fixed-wing Pilatus PC-12 in Hilo, following a $15.5 million community fundraising effort.
The first patient was transported to Oahu within 24 hours of the aircraft’s blessing, with the fixed-wing plane used for critical cases.
Each flight includes a nurse, medic, pilot, and often a patient companion, providing advanced care mid-flight.
The service, a partnership between local groups and the Oregon-based nonprofit, aims to reduce response times and improve emergency care access, especially in remote areas.
The team includes local hires and is expected to grow to 54 staff members as more aircraft arrive.
