Drax burns old-growth Canadian trees labeled as waste, undermining climate goals, a report reveals.
Drax, a major UK power station, continues to burn wood pellets from 250-year-old trees in old-growth forests in British Columbia, Canada, according to environmental group Stand.earth, which found evidence of whole logs from high-risk logging areas, including live trees with oozing sap.
Despite Drax’s claims of using waste wood, the report says industry rules allow old-growth trees to be misclassified as waste, enabling their harvest under the guise of renewable energy.
Critics argue this practice undermines climate goals and harms vital carbon sinks and wildlife habitats.
