Djibouti’s President Guelleh, 77, seeks sixth term in 2026 after age limit was removed, amid concerns over press freedom and fair elections.
Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh, in power since 1999, has announced his candidacy for a sixth term in the 2026 presidential election, following a parliamentary removal of the 75-year age limit.
The 77-year-old leader, nominated by his ruling RPP party, pledged to maintain national unity and stability.
His re-election is expected amid a political landscape marked by limited opposition and criticism over media suppression and lack of electoral freedom, with Djibouti ranked 168th out of 180 in the 2025 Press Freedom Index.
