Ben Soppitt campaigns to restore neglected Commonwealth war graves in Iraq, many without headstones, due to decades of neglect after the CWGC withdrew over safety concerns.
Ben Soppitt, honoring his grandfather’s burial at Basra War Cemetery in Iraq, is pushing for the restoration of neglected Commonwealth war graves, many of which lack headstones and have fallen into disrepair since the CWGC withdrew in the 1990s over security concerns.
Over 50,000 UK and Commonwealth soldiers, including thousands from India, are buried across Iraq, but many Indian troops are only listed by unit and number.
Soppitt, who has documented the deteriorating state of sites like Basra and Mosul, criticizes the CWGC for slow progress despite having plans, citing ongoing safety risks and UK travel advisories as barriers.
He calls the lack of proper commemoration a moral failing and historical injustice.
