BBC to apologize after editing Trump’s Jan. 6 speech to falsely imply he urged supporters to fight at the Capitol.
The BBC is expected to apologize after editing a clip of Donald Trump’s January 6, 2021, speech in a Panorama documentary, combining segments to suggest he told supporters he would join them at the Capitol to “fight like hell,” a claim not fully supported by the original remarks.
Internal concerns, raised in a summer memo by former BBC adviser Michael Prescott, prompted scrutiny from the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, which demanded accountability from BBC chairman Samir Shah.
The committee, led by Dame Caroline Dinenage, stressed the need to uphold impartiality and public trust.
Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson dismissed criticism as a “diversionary tactic,” while BBC journalist Nick Robinson defended the corporation’s commitment to truth amid political pressure.
The White House condemned the edit as dishonest and selective.
The BBC confirmed it is reviewing the matter.
