The UAE is expanding preventive healthcare via its Emirati Genome Programme, using a national genomic database to launch screening initiatives. At a recent conference, genetic counsellor Laura Winter-Paquette highlighted pilot programs in newborn and premarital screening, as well as testing healthy adults for genetic risks of heart disease and cancer, enabling early intervention. The programme also promotes pharmacogenomics to personalize treatments, improving outcomes and reducing drug side effects, reflecting a shift toward proactive, precision medicine in the country.
