Texas Rep. John Smithee, 40-year veteran of the House, won't run for re-election on Nov. 7, 2025.
Texas Republican Representative John Smithee, who has served District 86 since 1985, announced on November 7, 2025, that he will not seek re-election after 40 years in the Texas House.
A former attorney, Smithee chaired the criminal jurisprudence committee during the 2025 session and helped advance a major bail reform package.
He gained national attention during the 2023 impeachment trial of Attorney General Ken Paxton, where he opposed impeachment alongside 22 other Republicans.
