Starting in spring 2026, the National Trust will assume management of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site in Shropshire, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, taking over 10 museums, 400,000 objects, and 35 historic buildings.
The transition, backed by a £9 million government investment and support from heritage funds, aims to boost annual visits from 330,000 to 600,000 by reducing access barriers and expanding family programming.
The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust will continue operations until the handover, after which National Trust members will gain free entry.
The move, praised for its long-term sustainability and community focus, will be carried out in partnership with local organizations.
