New Zealand seeks public input on hunter-led plans to manage sika and wapiti deer for conservation and forest health.
New Zealand has launched a public consultation on draft management plans for two Herds of Special Interest—sika and wapiti deer—in the Central North Island and Fiordland, aiming to establish hunter-led conservation efforts on public land.
The initiative, announced by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Minister James Meager, seeks to balance recreational hunting with ecological protection, promote community stewardship, and support forest health and biodiversity.
The plans, developed with input from foundation groups and the Game Animal Council, include regulated hunting, professional deer control, meat recovery, and monitoring.
Public feedback is now open to shape the final management approach.
