A London police sergeant was fired for calling a detainee a "prick" and saying he "deserves to be beaten up."
Metropolitan Police sergeant Lawrence Hume has been dismissed without notice after being caught on camera saying a detainee "deserves to be beaten up," according to a misconduct hearing in south London.
The remarks, made during a secretly recorded conversation with an undercover journalist and shown in a BBC Panorama documentary, included calling the detainee a "prick" and demanding he be sent to prison "with the key thrown away."
The panel, chaired by Commander Jason Prins, ruled the comments constituted gross misconduct, noting they were made unprompted and in a leadership role where detainee welfare is critical.
Hume claimed frustration after the detainee attempted to spit at a colleague and denied endorsing violence, but offered no satisfactory explanation.
While allegations of underreporting force use or failing to report a colleague’s actions were not proven, the panel found his conduct damaged public trust.
This marks the sixth officer dismissed following the BBC investigation, which has prompted widespread scrutiny of police conduct in custody.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct called the remarks unacceptable and a breach of professional standards.
