A June 2025 derecho destroyed much of Barnes County, but St. Mary’s Church in Dazey survived unscathed, sparking local talk of a miracle.
A derecho storm on June 20, 2025, devastated rural Barnes County, North Dakota, uprooting trees and damaging infrastructure, but St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dazey remained unscathed despite being in the storm’s path.
The storm struck hours before the church’s 120th annual Feast of Corpus Christi, a tradition dating to German immigrant settlers in the 1880s, which was canceled due to the damage.
Though two large pines flanking the church were uprooted and debris littered the grounds, the church structure suffered no significant harm.
Locals have since called the event a miracle, highlighting the church’s survival amid widespread destruction and reinforcing its role as a spiritual and community anchor.
